The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships have been set to take place in Huntington Beach, CA, October 8-16. Hosted by Surfing America, the event is sanctioned by the International Surfing Association (ISA). Top amateur surfers from over 25 nations will compete in the contest.

Texas Surfing

Although "Everything is bigger in Texas," the state has never been known for killer waves. Despite inconsistent surf, Texas has its fair share of surfers. The Texas Surf Museum in Corpus Christi shares the history and evolution of the sport along the Texas coast. The museum opened in June 2005, and showcases classic surfboards, a mock garage shop, theater and various exhibits.
Located at, 309 N. Water St. in downtown Corpus Christi, the museum is open 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

Surfing in Cornwall

Jennifer Conlin wrote an article featured in The New York Times entitled, "Surf's up in southern England," highlighting the surf scene in Cornwall. Conlin cites Newquay as the most exciting place for young surfers, offering, "challenging surf...music festivals, impromptu beach parties and an array of extreme water sports like wave skiing and kite surfing."

Dantas is King

Wiggolly Dantas, a grommit from Brazil, won the Quiksilver King of the Groms contest today. The event was held near Capbreton, France, and showcased some of the best young surfers in the world.

East vs. West at the X

The East Coast team won the X Games surfing contest in Mexico's Puerto Escondido, continuing a 3 year winning streak. Despite the absence of world champion Kelly Slater, the East Coast team pulled off an impressive performance under leadership of Matt Kechele. Jamie O'Brien was voted most valuable player, earning a score of 8.5 in the fourth quarter.

Andy Irons wins US Open of Surfing

With an onlooking crowd of over 100,000, Andy Irons beat Rob Machado in the Final Round of the US Open of Surfing yesterday. In professional surfing events, heats usually last 30 minutes and the surfer is allowed 10 waves which are scored on a 10 point scale. The surfer's top 3 waves are calculated into the score for the heat. With only seconds left, Machado paddled into a wave which led him to receive a final score of 7.34 - only .44 points shy of winning the title.

Kelly Slater wins Billabong Pro Jbay
Kelly Slater won the Billabong Pro Jbay in South Africa last week. The world champ beat Andy Irons in the final heat. Enough talk...just watch the video.

Quiksilver King of the Groms
Quicksilver King of the Groms 2005, the international competition for surfers under the age of 16, will culminate August 7. The finals will begin August 2nd in Capbreton, on the South-West coast of France. The winner will be given the opportunity to surf in qualifying rounds of 3 competition on the World Championship Tour.
